Management vs Leadership

“Proper planning prevents poor performance.” - Brendan Goodridge

Leaders are more overall goal oriented. They decide the vision and scope needed to accomplish a goal and assigns tasks that best fulfills that goal.

Managers are more Task oriented. they find a away to get a task done efficiently within the scope set by the leader. Thus why there can be multiple managers but a single leader.

Values

“Take your time, but don’t waste your time.” - Lupita Nyong’o

Shadowing and working with leaders like Creative Director Greg Monfries and Assistant Director of Residence Life Brendan Goodridge have revealed that good leaders are consistent with their values, while being able to grow through vulnerability, can be clear and honest with their team and have a dependable passion.

Leadership Philosophy Framework

Community-based work

Spreading out work locally in communities to accomplish a goal keeps a community strong. Members tend to be more open to accepting new projects to work on when they know its community based and know the people they are working with.

Co-operation

Shifting work culture from manager-employee based relationships to business partnerships promotes more collaboration.

Time and Boundaries

Respecting collaborators time and boundaries while being firm with your own reasonably enough to get tasks done and goals achieved. Team members tend to be more efficient when their time is respected.

Democratic Leadership

Democratic leaders, also known as participative leaders, accept input from one or more group members when making decisions and solving problems, but the leader retains the final say when choices are made. Group members tend to be encouraged and motivated by this style of leadership.

This style of leadership often leads to more effective and accurate decisions, since no leader can be an expert in all areas. Input from group members with specialized knowledge and expertise creates a more complete basis for decision-making.

Creating an Environment for “Flow-State”

Insomnia Artworks provides a space for all members of the team can utilize their skills at peak efficiency (which can trigger an out of body experience for some creatives). Nurturing A work environment where “flow-state” can be achieved consistently will motivate team members to engage in their position on the team. It is a leaders role to foster that environment.

Understanding

Understanding is a key feature in leader ship because if a leader does not understand the team that they’re leading then they cannot lead effectively.

Vulnerability

Vulnerability, especially in a democratic leader ship, can enhance the groups willingness to be open and honest. It creates an environment for clear communication.
